I had been eagerly awaiting Jane Maxwell's second novel and it certainly didn't disappoint. From the first breath-taking chapter to its surprising conclusion, I was engrossed. 'Vengeance is Mine' is fast moving and has clearly defined characters. Once again the author's obvious knowledge of South Africa and its wildlife shines through, as we follow the novels twists and turns. Through her words we experience the lands beauty, 'the poignant smell of the bush after the rains' and are left in no doubt of the affection she holds for the country. I highly recommend this book and will now patiently await her next one.

A skilful who-dunnit and a perceptive why-dunnit as well
The story starts with a chilling first chapter about the rape and sadistic murder of an innocent Thai boy.The coldblooded circumstances of the scene horrify, since the brutality is implied.
The writer proceeds through the book with compassion but unflinching resolve to be objective about her characters. These include a serial killer, and a South African woman,Taryn, married to a domineering husband, as well as the staff of a safari park.
The little South African police detective, Inspector Nduli is a triumph. Starting as a standoffish fusspot, he grows in maturity as the book nears its conclusion.Similarly, we’re given the travels and crimes of the villain through his eyes. There’s a dry humour in the account of Taryn’s first meeting with her husband’s mistress.
Jane Maxwell writes about Zimbabwe and South Africa with loving insight and her snapshot of Thailand is totally convincing. Her style is alert and unpretentious.

Great hook at the beginning of this story. Although it became fairly obvious who the murderer was what, wasn't obvious was who murdered the murderer! Great characters, cleverly linked together, and as in Jane Maxwell's previous book, the description of aspects of life in South Africa showed the love the author has for it.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Tense brutal thriller that kept me guessing until the end. Uniquely set in a game park in South Africa in which are drawn together a unlikely collection of characters. Though brutal the subject of love, loss and poverty are handled thoughtfuly and with compassion. A definite read for those who enjoy a detective led thriller. Hope to see more Captain Nduli stories from Jane Maxwell.
